Frequently Asked Questions

Program & Credits

What kind of diploma do students earn?

Graduates earn a Michigan high school diploma (not a GED). It is recognized by colleges, training programs, and employers. MCA also hosts an online graduation ceremony to celebrate student achievements.

Can students transfer credits from another school?

Yes. Students can transfer in credits they’ve already earned at another high school. MCA advisors will review transcripts to see which classes count toward graduation and then create a personalized graduation plan with the remaining requirements.

Is MCA accredited?

Michigan Cyber Academy is a public online high school. All coursework is aligned to Michigan academic standards and led by certified teachers.

Cost & Technology

Is Michigan Cyber Academy free?

Yes. MCA is a tuition-free public online high school for Michigan residents ages 14–21 who meet the enrollment requirements. There are no tuition costs for families.

What technology do students need?

Students need reliable internet access and a computer or tablet to complete their coursework, though a computer is strongly recommended for the best experience. Smartphones alone are not sufficient for online classes. MCA can provide a laptop to students who need one.

Classes, Scheduling & Pacing

Is everything 100% Online

All coursework, assignments, and exams are completed 100% online. Occasionally, Michigan requires certain state tests to be taken in person. If that applies to you, we’ll let you know well in advance — and in some cases, there may be options to request an alternative or exemption.

Do students have to be online at certain times?

No. MCA is completely flexible — there are no set login times or required live sessions. Students can study in the morning, late at night, or whenever it works best for their learning style and personal responsibilities. This flexibility helps students who work better outside of a traditional schedule, have jobs, or balance other commitments to keep making steady progress toward their diploma.

How many classes do students take at a time?

Students are scheduled for four classes at a time. This helps keep the workload manageable while still making steady progress toward graduation. Within those four, students can focus on one subject at a time or spread their effort across multiple courses. Once a student completes a class, a new one that is required for graduation will be assigned so they are always moving forward toward earning their diploma.

How fast can a student graduate?

Students at MCA can move at the pace that works best for them. Some students finish classes faster and are able to graduate sooner than in a traditional school. Others may take extra time if they need a flexible schedule to balance school with personal responsibilities. Both paths are supported so every student can successfully earn their diploma.

How much time should students plan to spend each week?

Students should expect to spend 15–25 hours per week on their coursework to stay on track for graduation. Those who put in additional time may be able to finish classes more quickly and move toward graduating sooner.

Teachers & Support

How do teachers support students?

MCA teachers grade assignments, provide feedback, and guide students through each course. They are available by messaging, phone, or virtual meetings whenever help is needed. Teachers also keep in touch with parents so families stay connected and involved. In addition, teachers and advisors help students plan for graduation by making sure they stay on track with the classes they need.

What happens if a student falls behind?

If a student begins to fall behind, teachers and advisors step in to offer extra support. They may reach out to the student and family, help create a plan to catch up, and adjust the pace if needed. MCA’s goal is to keep students engaged and moving forward, even if they face challenges along the way.

Enrollment

Who can enroll in MCA?

Enrollment is open to Michigan residents ages 14–21. Students must complete the enrollment forms, provide required documentation such as proof of age and residency, and be approved by an MCA advisor before starting classes.

What is the enrollment process?

The process begins by submitting an online application. After that, an MCA advisor will guide families through completing the enrollment forms and providing required documentation, such as proof of age and residency. Once everything is reviewed and approved, the student will receive their login information and can begin classes.
